In this speech, Abbitt praised the benefits of the Rural Electrification program and concluded speech with warning that United States represented the “only hope of maintaining freedom in the free world” and that people of “satellite countries re looking to the people of America to somehow, someway, remove the yoke of oppression that is holding them as virtual slaves of ruthless and despotic rulers.”


. Abbitt was always very concerned with farmers in his district and throughout the state, often proposing legislation to help both tobacco and peanut farmers.
