Title

[Letter] 1968 August 8, Washington, D. C. [to] Congressman Watkins Abbitt, Washington, D. C.

Description

Joseph F. McCaffrey of WMAL TV, asked Abbitt to answer questions via mail, in place of an interview for his radio show, "Meet the Member." The enclosed question sheet included questions about Abbitt's routine, changes in his job over the years, and his hobbies. In his reply, Abbitt noted that the volume of phone calls and letters he received from constituents had tripled or quadrupled since he first entered Congress in 1948. Abbitt explained the change as having to do with “more people than ever seem [turning] to their Congressman when they have problems dealing with the federal government.” Calling such constituent service a “chore,” Abbitt noted that “A member now spends anywhere from 50 t o75% of his time attempting to serve the needs of his constituents.” In the letter, Abbitt also described his daily routine in Congress: “I normally arrive at the office before 8:00 a.m., attempt to answer my my mail, greet visigtors, and talk a good bit on the telephone. I normally have one or more committee meetings beginning at 10 a.m. and generally return to the office briefly before going to the House floor at noon. I keep in telephone contact with the office when I have to be on the floor and generally return to sign my mail shortly after 5:00. I rarely ever leave the office before 7:00 or 8:00." He noted that he rarely never took vacations except to hunt in the fall, his "primary hobby."
