Description

H. McDonald Spiers, peanut farmer from Como, North Carolina, wrote to Herbert C. Bonner that Agriculture Secretary Ezra Taft Benson was “using the authority of his office to bankrupt the producer” with excessive storage of the peanut crop at “unnecessary expense to the tax payer.” Bonner forwarded the complaint to Abbitt and requested he hold hearings on the peanut program. Abbitt replied that he had written Benson with a similar concern, had not yet received a reply but would investigate further.
