[Letter] 1963 October 2, Washington D.C. [to] Robert B. Delano, Richmond, Va.

Title

[Letter] 1963 October 2, Washington D.C. [to] Robert B. Delano, Richmond, Va.

Description

Robert Delano, president of the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation, wrote to Abbitt to express opposition to H.R. 5733, a bill to make permanent a food stamps pilot program. Delano denounced the program as a “public dole” that had a tendency to make citizens “dependent on ‘the great white father” for a portion of their food.” Delano argued that state and local governments should be responsible for food assistance. He closed by wishing Abbitt “best of luck on the Civil Rights bill fight.” Abbitt replied that had always opposed "the Food Stamp Plan” and would continue to do so.
